How much of an impact would Living Proof's Healthy Hair Molecule technology have? We put it to the test.
Increasingly gaining prominence on the haircare scene, Living Proof build their products around their patented Healthy Hair Molecule technology, which forgoes silicone and instead creates an invisible and weightless molecular shield around individual strands. In doing so, it claims to make hair healthier from the inside out, reducing frizz and the build-up of dirt.
To be honest, I’d never really thought of using a primer on my hair, despite that fact that I’d always apply one before my make-up, so was curious to see how well this would work. Unfortunately, it does also mean I have very little to compare it to. As a style extender, I’m not really sure how much longer it made my style last, but I would say that it definitely made it feel silky-smooth and look beautifully glossy!
Curious to try a science-based approach to haircare, I decided to give their shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo and style extender a go, starting by taking a short online quiz to determine my hair type and find products that should work for me.
Here’s what happened!
Living Proof’s dry shampoo was a love at first spray kind of affair. As well as having a delicious scent, it soaked up the oil on my hair well and didn’t take a lot of product to banish that day-old hair feeling.
I first tried it before meeting a friend for dinner, getting ready in my work toilets. After brushing through, I used a barrel brush to try and plump it up, using the dry shampoo to help lift my roots. I’d say it did help to hold the volume and didn’t leave any sticky residue as some tends to.
However, there was still one question: would it pass the dreaded dry shampoo visibility test? Being blonde, this tends to be less of a problem for me than for other people, so I gave it to a brunette colleague to try on her post-gym barnet.
Initially she found that while it was great on the top, she could feel it on the lengths. She did however admit that she had probably gone a little crazy with it and so the next day she tried it again – this time with a little less enthusiasm – and hey presto, it worked.
Would I make the swap from my normal dry shampoo to this one, given the difference in price? Probably – I found that I needed less product, and it did a better job!
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo (PhD) and Living Proof Full Conditioner
As someone who normally uses a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, it still took my hair a few washes to get used to Living Proof’s products.
The shampoo smelt divine and it lathered remarkably well, but I felt it left my hair feeling a little dry after the first wash. Conscious that with new skincare regime it takes my skin a while to adjust, I decided to apply this principle to my hair and stick with it.
Within a couple of weeks I did find that there had been a noticeable improvement in how thick my usually infuriatingly fine hair felt and that it no longer felt dry at all. All in all, I’d say it was worth the wait.
Living Proof Prime Style Extender
All in all, I found the Living Proof products to do a really good job. I would say it’s important to get the right ones for your own hair – fortunately the range covers just about every type – if you want to get the most out of them, so be sure to take the hair diagnostics quiz before you purchase.
