How to Amp Up Your National Fitness Day
Lost Sock Memorial Day, Name Your Car Day, National Dance Like a Chicken Day (14 May, fyi) – there’s a ‘day’ for more or less everything, if you look hard enough. But one that we can really get behind is National Fitness Day, which sees gyms, leisure clubs, and a whole bunch of other health-lovers around the country join forces to encourage us all to move more, in a way that works for us.

Fortunately, with so many incredible gyms, boutique studios and yoga lodges out there, and more popping up by the second, it’s not hard to find something to tickle your fitness fancy. Without further ado, here's the freebies, intro offers and classes to try this National Fitness Day!


1. Try A New Studio

Our pick: Boom Cycle, Waterloo

Boom Cycle’s newest studio, located just a few minutes’ walk from Waterloo Station, opened this week and Balance Festival were among the first to see it. Featuring a plush entrance hall, brand new bikes and a well-stocked changing room – not to mention the fact that it’s right next to a Gail’s – it’s certainly worth checking out.

To celebrate National Fitness Day, Boom will be holding Hip Hop rides in all studios, including a Stormzy Vs Eminem special in the Monument studio. If you can’t make it down then fear not, you’ll still be able to Lose Yourself in the music when it’s repeated at the Waterloo studio on Friday 27th September.


2. Bag Yourself A Freebie

Our pick: Nuffield Health Open Day

Got your gym kit at work? As part of their celebrations for National Fitness Day, Nuffield Health will be opening all their gyms nationwide to the public, free of charge, for one day only. They’ll be putting on special classes, hosting gym floor challenges and offering free health MOTs. As ever, towels are provided so you’ll just need to bring your kit and some photographic ID.

Top tip: Many of their gyms have saunas, steam rooms and swimming pools – choose one of these and turn National Fitness Day into National Feel-yo-self Day.


3. Make It More Experiential

Our pick: KXU, Chelsea

We love a boutique studio, but Chelsea’s KXU takes things to the next level with its immaculate spaces, build your own meal bar and a Medi-Spa offering cryotherapy, infrared saunas and a vast array of facials.

At the core of their offering is a range of group fitness classes covering everything from dynamic vinyasa yoga to a signature strength class, The Games. Celebrate whatever successes you’ve achieved this month by treating yourself to a class and a treatment afterwards – you won’t regret it. 


4. Take a New Class

Our pick: Another_Space

It’s often said that the secret to keeping up any fitness routine is finding something you love, and while this is undoubtedly true, perhaps the other cornerstone is finding something that you know is just going to make you feel a bit better at the end of a stressful day.

Enter: Another_Space. From studios in Covent Garden and Bank they offer HIIT, yoga and cycle classes, and we love their stress-busting, pulse-raising, boxing-based HIIT classes so much we feature it at Balance Festival every year.

Our advice? Save the temptation to visualise that awful colleague’s face on the punchbag until the end of the session when you’re super tired and running out of steam – it’ll give you a renewed vigour.


5. Overcome Your Fears

Even if you’ve not been to a Barry’s Bootcamp class before, you probably already have an idea of what to expect: treadmills, loud music and a whole lot of sweat in a dramatically red-lit room. Yet despite having a devoted following – or maybe precisely because of it – your first visit can still be a scary prospect.

We suggest making National Fitness Day the day you swallow your fear and book into that very first class. Not only is it a fun environment to be in (we promise), but even if you're not a fan, at least it’s only 45 minutes long!
