Over the past few years, there’s been a sustained shift in the way that we approach the concept of ‘fitness’. Gone are the days when it was all about fitting in your favourite jeans; in 2020, we appreciate that getting moving can have as much impact on our brain as it does on our abs. Now, Balance Festival’s favourite spin studio is taking it one step further with the launch of a session aimed at encouraging positive mental health by focusing as much on mindfulness as on hitting the beat.
Dubbed the Mindful Ride, it will combine all the benefits of their much-loved spin classes with mindfulness techniques including guided meditation, intention setting and gratitude practice. And while speedy surges and self-reflection may not sound like the most obvious combination, Boom Cycle founder Hilary Rowland explained that its power is actually how it’s curated: “The Mindful Ride concept is built on the foundations that music evokes sensory responses and allows riders to dig deeper into themselves and enables them to reach a heightened state of euphoria.”
In order to ensure that the ride is as valuable as possible to participants, it has been designed in partnership with Emotion Matters, who specialise in the psychological and nutritional treatment of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and work stress: “We have had a longstanding relationship with James Lamper, clinical lead at Emotion Matters who is a valued rider at our Battersea studio, so this partnership was very organic for us,” she explained.
What’s more, for every rider present a donation will be made to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), a UK charity dedicated to preventing suicide and supporting those at risk. “We wanted to bring in a charity element to the ride as this is a big focus for us in 2020, which is why we chose CALM to donate to, to help their mission to offer life-saving services, provoking national conversation and bringing people together to empower everyone to reject living miserably and stand together against suicide.”
