They say that the most important relationship you have in your life is the one that you have with yourself, and I couldn’t agree more. Self-love is one of the most powerful emotions you will ever experience and, contrary to popular belief has nothing to do with being selfish, conceited or thinking that you are better than anyone else.
We need to FIND the time to practice self-love so that we can re-connect with ourselves and live a life that truly shines; a life where we keep growing, learning and feeling good about ourselves a little more every day.
Here are 5 of my favourite ways to practise self-love:
1. Learn to put yourself first
Know that this is YOUR life and if you allow yourself to do what everyone else wants you to do all of the time then you will never be in control or be able to create your own life that you truly love.
2. Be yourself – without seeking the approval of others
That’s right – dye your hair pink if you want to, take a year off work to go trekking, go see the movie you want to see by yourself … whatever your heart desires give yourself permission to do it! Because an important part of self-love is simply allowing yourself to be yourself!
3. Take care of yourself
If you want to feel positive every day, if you want a body that isn’t going to let you down and if you want to think clearly and have abundant energy, then you need to invest the time into taking care of yourself. We need to give ourselves the nurturing, rest, exercise and fuel we need to be at our best. And remember that active bodies need to rest and recover just as much as they need to exercise so find your balance and do what’s right for YOU. If you want to love yourself then you need to take care of yourself.
4. Take the time to do what you enjoy without feeling guilty
Remember that taking care of yourself allows you to be there for everyone else in your life. So give yourself permission to have a lazy day when you feel that you need it. If you feel like a day on the couch – have a day on the couch. It’s not a waste of time if you enjoy it and feel better afterwards.
5. Love and accept yourself when you’re are at your worse
No one is perfect, everyone has bad days and we all make mistakes. So
rather than beating yourself up about it, why not focus on moving forward instead. Know that everyone is human (yes, even those seemingly perfect girls on Instagram) so choose to come from a place of love and just decide how to make tomorrow a better day than today.
Self-love takes commitment and practice and I want to encourage everybody to find that time – so they can invest in themselves, back themselves, challenge themselves and ultimately believe in themselves enough to create a life that they love.
When you look, and think, and come from a place of love your whole world changes for the better and I want every one of you to know this and understand the power you can create when you start to show yourself a little self-love.
