The Benefits Of Blueberries For Your Body And Brain
The benefits of blueberries have been much touted – from fighting inflammation to keeping our brains active, they've been credited with all manner of health benefits and are often lauded as one of the most powerful fruits on offer. But with the word ‘superfood’ thrown around left, right and centre these days, do blueberries really live up to the hype?

What Vitamins Do Blueberries Contain?

They might be small, but blueberries sure are mighty when it comes to their nutrient density. Take Vitamin C for example - your mind probably goes straight to oranges, grapefruit or, at a push, kiwis, right? However, a 150g serving of blueberries packs in 25% of your recommended daily intake of this vital vitamin, which helps to support the immune system and aids the body in absorbing iron. If that wasn’t enough, the same amount also contains 36% of your Vitamin K and 25% of your manganese, both of which play a key role in keeping your bones and teeth healthy.

Blueberries Are Full Of Antioxidants

Why are antioxidants so important? Essentially, because they can neutralise free radicals. These highly unstable molecules cause cell damage, which takes a toll on every part of our bodies, from our skin to our vital organs. In turn, eating a diet rich in antioxidants has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, some cancers, and age-related diseases.

Blueberries Boost Your Brainpower

Forget spending hours stuck on sudoku puzzles to keep your brain sharp, because it’s believed that consuming blueberries regularly can slow cognitive decline and boost brainpower. According to research by Reading University, the flavonoids that blueberries contain increase blood flow to the brain and connect with the signal pathways that are crucial to brain cell survival. They also found that individuals who consumed a blueberry drink in the morning showed better in attention-span tests than those who hadn’t.

So, how to incorporate more of these little wonder-fruits into your diet? Well, it’s actually fairly easy. Aside from picking up a packet to graze on when those 4pm sugar cravings hit or adding them to your morning smoothie, more and more food brands have begun to incorporate them into their products.

Among them is RXBAR, whose Blueberry Protein Bar has been created using egg whites, almonds, cashews and dates, to deliver 12g of protein. Plus, you get all the benefits of blueberries. Sitting as a fruity option alongside more decadent flavours including Chocolate Sea Salt, Peanut Butter and Coconut Chocolate, it’s a top on-the-go option – after all, for all their pros, blueberries aren’t the simplest of fruits to pop in your bag.

Head over to the RXBAR website to stock up or visit their Instagram to find out more.
